ALEXANDRITE

Source

Alexandrite is a special color changing variety of the mineral Chrysoberyl that radiates different colors in different lights. It is a rare gemstone and is highly valuable for its morpheus quality. Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia during the 1800’s and was named after the former czar of Russia, Alexander II. Eventually the Russian deposits of Alexandrite exhausted. Small deposits were then found in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), and until the 1980's these were the only two sources of this rare gemstone. Since then newer deposits of the gemstone have been discovered in Brazil, Tanzania, Madagascar, India, Australia and Myanmar, with Brazil being the most significant.

Alexandrite is a beryllium and aluminum oxide and it belongs to the oxide class of minerals. It is a rare and exquisite gemstone and is most often faceted into round and cushion cuts that can bring out the best of its color and lustre. The unique color changing attribute of Alexandrite is due to slight impurities of the element chromium.
